Dignity doesn’t disappear in disaster

Thirteen-year-old Ananya from Barpeta still remembers how the floods turned her world upside down. When her village submerged, school closed, and the relief camp became home. Privacy was impossible, clean water was scarce, and asking for a sanitary pad felt terrifying after her family’s heavy losses. Embarrassed and unprepared, she began missing classes. That changed when NEAID stepped in with a compassionate, holistic response. Alongside relief and learning support, NEAID provided menstrual hygiene kits and held awareness sessions with help from the local Sub Centre—giving girls like Ananya dignity, comfort, and the confidence to return to class. “The hygiene kits and the way they talked to us made me feel seen and cared for,” Ananya shares. “Now I don’t worry about missing school or feeling ashamed. Even in the camp, I can focus on my studies.”
